Time Can Be On Your Side If You Allow It

The other day, my man and I were hustling to get out the door to go have a leisurely breakfast at this super cute, quintessential French bakery that I had just discovered.

I really wanted to show it to him…

I really wanted to get out of the house for the housekeeper…

And really wanted to get there and back before my first meeting of the day…

But we didn’t have much time.

So I was pacing by the back door, waiting impatiently.

When he noticed this, he graciously spoke to it saying, “I didn’t realize we were in a time crunch.”

To which I snarkily replied, “Yes, you did!”

Ouch!

I immediately regretted it and apologized.

But why did that come out of my mouth in the first place?

That’s not who I am and yet that’s what I said.

And this brings us to the topic for today… Our relationship with time.

Although it may be true that time is a non-renewable resource that we never get back…

Have you ever noticed that sometimes you feel like things flow so smoothly, you get a ton of stuff done, and it seems like you have all the time in the world?

While other times you’re worried about time, everything takes longer than you expected, and more to-dos just pile up? (And you end up being stressed and snarky.)

Our experience of time changes based on how we are relating to it. And in turn, our experience of life changes based on how we’re relating to time.

Sometimes we feel spacious and divine… and other times not so much.

So the next day, I tried a different tack… one that ALWAYS works better for me.

I decided what I wanted to get done but reduced dramatically the time-sensitive constraints I put on myself.

In fact, I choose to commit to only one time specific activity, giving myself much more flexibility.

The result?

One of the best days ever, full of flow.

Now I’m not suggesting throwing out your calendar, blowing off meetings, or ignoring your task list.

But I am asking you to choose your highest priorities, commit to that, and then trust the flow of life more.

It’s not about discarding structure but rather about infusing it with trust and adaptability.

It’s about testing out what the least amount of time-based structure is that you need to get your work done in this world.

It’s about being fully committed to your highest and best life, and not living a compromised, time pressured version of it.

With some practice, you’ll find yourself creating days that resonate with the essence of living exquisitely. Stack those and you’ve got an exquisite life… one that’s truly worth living.

It’s time to lean into that, yes?

My addiction to time scarcity–and what I did about it

I’ve been totally guilty of…

Trying to fit one more thing in before my next meeting.

Scarfing down my lunch at my desk before my next zoom call…or actually on it?

Rushing to get somewhere because I cut it so close leaving the house.

I’ve done ALL of these things and the truth is, I still do sometimes! Ugh! All in the name of efficiency, growth, and personal responsibility to my business.

But how does it feel?

Anything but RICH!

Rushing around, cramming too much into one day or one week, being over busy… it just isn’t a rich and abundant life.

It’s time scarcity.

And time scarcity IS scarcity. Flat out.

That was one of the biggest AH-HAs I had over the years– that money scarcity is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to being in lack.

Now truth be told…when I started this journey, I just wanted to make a f—- ton of money. I didn’t want to feel constrained by not having enough.

Of course I wanted to do good work and truly serve, but I also wanted the big payday. I make this point over and over because I think people have a lot of guilt about wanting to make big money. Like they can’t be a good person AND make money.

But that’s not true and money was, in the beginning, a huge driver for me.

There was a ton of personal growth work and tactical action that I needed to take to figure out money abundance.

But once I did, I realized that I was still in scarcity…

Scarcity about time has been a BIG ONE for me but you might find you’re in scarcity about love, presence, connection, attention, or even your health.

In talking to my 84 year old mother on my trip out to see her in California last week, she said: “You’re so positive and happy.”

Hi Mom 👋

She’s known me for a long time, so I really appreciated that reflection. But it didn’t happen overnight or without facing some serious demons.

And “by facing demons” I mean really reflecting on the results I was getting, being honest that I was ‘at cause’ creating these outcomes. There was no one and no thing outside of me that was determining this and was to blame. It was me and how I was choosing to live.

Next came claiming that I was not available for a life lived like this.

This required a level of awareness about what was happening, getting clear, and making decision after decision to live my life differently.

I explain it and give a couple of examples of how it works in this video clip: A 3-Step Process For Planning Your Time Away From The Office

Once you watch it, do a little reflection… where are you in scarcity in your life? That’s the awareness piece. Then it’s time to hold yourself to a higher standard and start doing life and business differently.

Let me know how it goes for you!

Time Poor Or Time Rich?

Yesterday I flew to beautiful Cape Cod, MA to host my Spirit of Wealth Mastermind and Masterclass retreat. Sitting in first class, the man next to me is talking on the phone to his assistant. He’s got this intense energy and is a bit agitated. I overhear something I feel like I can help him with, so I share a service recommendation and it leads to us talking about business.

All good. But here’s the thing I noticed though… when the plane stops at the gate, he jumps out of his seat and is really stressed to get his bag out of the overhead compartment. He’s immediately in a rush… but there’s no place to go.

We’re in the second row of first class and the door is still closed! The stress isn’t going to make that door open any quicker. There’s no one to elbow in front of. There’s no need to be agitated.

Now, I admit, I don’t know what’s going on for him. It could have been a crazy day… but in this experience what I saw was that he was behaving in a way that was very time poor, despite having a lot of money.

Let me just say, I noticed this because I used to be the same way! I used to have that same kind of response pattern…

I must stress, stress, stress and rush, rush, rush.

I’m proud of (mostly) not being like that anymore. But here’s the thing…

The change for me didn’t come as a result of making more money.

It wasn’t like the money changed me and I instantly became a chill person. Nope.

What happened was that I asked myself… What kind of person do I want to be? How do I want to live my life?

I didn’t want to be someone who lived in scarcity… whether that’s time scarcity or money scarcity.

You’re either going to be a frenetic human in the world who believes you don’t have time…

Or you’re going to be a creative agent in the world who determines how you want to show up in each and every moment. You know what I choose. ;-)

And this choice doesn’t have anything to do with how much money you’re making. Money just amplifies who you already are. So who are you going to be?

YOU are a creative agent and YOU get to choose how you show up.
